What is Proffee?
Proffee: Should You Recommend It to Your Patients?
Proffee, a blend of coffee and protein powder, is a new trend gaining traction.
While it can be a good option for coffee-drinking patients looking to boost their protein intake, it's not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
Here's a breakdown to help you advise your patients.
Pros of Proffee:
- Increased Protein Intake: For patients who skip meals or have a hard time meeting their daily protein goals, proffee can help. Protein can promote satiety, support muscle mass, and aid in weight management.
Cons of Proffee:
- Not for Everyone: Patients who don't drink coffee are better off with a meal replacement shake or a healthy breakfast.
- Taste and Texture: Some may dislike the taste or texture of proffee.
- Nutrient Concerns: Sugary or low-quality protein powders can negate the benefits. (Look for powders with 20-30 grams of protein per scoop and less than 5 grams of sugar.)
If you want to learn more about picking a protein powder, I've created a simple framework called The 4 P's to Picking a Protein Powder. You can download it for free here.
So your patient wants to try Proffee, how do they make it?
- Simply, mix desired amount of coffee with 1-2 scoops of protein powder.
- Use cold-brew coffee for better mixing. Blend or use a hand mixer to achieve a smooth consistency.
- Unflavored protein powder blended well minimizes the grainy texture that can occur.
- Alternatively, they can add a shot of espresso to a pre-made protein shake and serve chilled.
But here's the bottom Line
A balanced, whole-foods diet is still the best way to get all the nutrients your patients need. Proffee can be a helpful tool, but it shouldn't replace high-quality foods.
Extensive research has been done on protein and caffeine separately, but no studies have been done specifically on Proffee to date.
*Personally, I like my coffee just the way it is. Have you tried Proffee???
